The Federalists were keenly aware of the failures of previous republics in ancient Greece and Rome. In the celebrated 10th Federalist Paper, James Madison pinpointed the root cause of violent factionalism: the boundless desires and varying abilities of people to acquire, as Alexander Hamilton described in Federalist #12, “those darling objects of human avarice and enterprise.” Madison concluded that “the latent causes of faction are thus sown in the nature of man.” This profound understanding underscored the Federalists’ determination to craft a system resilient against the inherent vanity in human nature.
