Teilhard de Chardin posited that the grandest scale on which to conceive the entire history of life as a causal narrative is in response to a cohering force in nature. In more recent historical times, this binding force has been the emergence of laws, which were then disseminated by common languages to ever larger populations. One can argue that the cohering power of Rome (spread by Latin) rested on Roman law, that of Islam (spread by Arabic) on Islamic law, and that of Imperial Britain (spread by English) on the rise of common law, leading to that landmark in history, the creation of the U.S. Constitution.
